Karen Blackwood is the founder and director of Blackwood Music Academy and has built an outstanding reputation for developing confident, skilled musicians and successful bands. She is particularly proud to maintain a 100% examination pass rate, reflecting her commitment to high-quality teaching, thorough preparation and student success.
A graduate of the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with an endorsement in Guitar Teaching and later completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at Moray House School of Education and Sport. She combines over 20 years of classroom teaching experience with more than 30 years of private instrumental tuition, bringing a wealth of expertise to every lesson.
During her twenty years teaching music at Crieff High School, Karen developed extensive knowledge of the Scottish curriculum and Qualifications Scotland assessment requirements. She is particularly recognised for her success in preparing students for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Guitar qualifications, with many pupils achieving outstanding results. Her expertise is regularly sought by students and parents looking for guidance through the examination process.
Karen has an exceptional track record of examination success and is proud to maintain a 100% pass rate for pupils entering music examinations. Her students consistently achieve excellent results with ABRSM, Trinity College London, Rockschool and Qualifications Scotland courses, with many gaining Merit, Distinction and top-grade passes. Her structured yet encouraging approach helps students build confidence, develop strong musical foundations and perform at their very best when it matters most.
What truly sets Karen apart is her commitment to developing well-rounded musicians. While technical ability and examination success are important, she is equally passionate about building confidence, creativity, performance skills and a lifelong love of music. Under her direction, Blackwood Music Academy has become known not only for high-quality tuition but also for providing exciting opportunities to perform in bands, concerts, festivals, competitions and community events.
Karen has significant experience supporting both mainstream and Additional Support Needs (ASN) pupils, creating lessons that are engaging, accessible and tailored to individual learning styles. As both an experienced teacher and a parent, she brings a practical understanding of supporting young people with ADHD, autism and other additional needs, helping every student reach their potential in a positive, nurturing and encouraging environment.
Alongside teaching, Karen has authored her own beginner guitar tutor book, developed specifically to support students through the early stages of learning. She prepares pupils for examinations with ABRSM, Trinity College London and Rockschool, while also supporting students undertaking the performance, understanding music and composition elements of Qualifications Scotland qualifications.
Karen teaches acoustic, classical and electric guitar, bass guitar, piano and drum kit. Although her principal study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was classical guitar under renowned guitarist Philip Thorne, her proficiency across multiple instruments—including guitar, bass, piano, trumpet and drums—allows her to offer a uniquely broad and practical approach to music education. This versatility enables her to support students not only as instrumentalists, but also as ensemble musicians, band members, composers and performers.
Whether your goal is to gain qualifications, join a band, perform on stage, pursue music at a higher level or simply enjoy making music, Karen's experience, enthusiasm and proven track record make her one of the most respected and sought-after music educators in the area. Her passion for helping students succeed continues to inspire musicians of all ages and abilities throughout the Forth Valley and beyond.
Mrs Blackwood inspired my passion for classical guitar while I was in school. Her engaging lessons and support led me to apply and get accepted into The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Twelve years later, I graduated with a 1st class honours degree in Music Education and am now a secondary school music teacher. Thank you so much, Mrs. Blackwood!
